Raiders' Geno Smith and Pete Carroll open up on Ashton Jeanty's struggles

We're officially three weeks into the Ashton Jeanty experiment, and Las Vegas Raiders fans are starting to lose their patience.

The No. 6 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft has been underwhelming so far. He was the odds-on favorite to win Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, and while he could still finish the year strong, his case isn't looking so strong right now.

Pete Carroll admits he needs to put Ashton Jeanty in a position to succeed

Jeanty had 63 rushing yards on 17 carries in the 41-24 blowout loss to the Washington Commanders in Week 3. With that in mind, Raiders head coach Pete Carroll took the blame for not being able to establish the run and put him in a position to succeed.

"We have to balance out what we’re doing so we can mix better," Carroll said after the loss. "We didn’t run the football at all early, and then when we did, we drove the football. We made our scores."

Carroll added that the negative game script didn't help, but he still liked what he saw from his rookie.

"Once we got going, I thought Ashton did a really good job with his opportunities. He got a lot of carries today. It was a good ball game for him. It was tough, and he played tough and showed you how he does it," Carroll continued.

Geno Smith has some advice for Ashton Jeanty

QB Geno Smith could use more help from the running game. Even so, as a late bloomer himself, he also knows that it might take some time to get to where he wants to be.

"Just sticking with it," Smith added. "It’s not college—I mean, that’s the reality. It’s a big boy league, and it’s going to be tough every week. There are no cupcakes. There are no lollypops. It’s big boy football, week in and week out. We’ve got to help him all around him. We’ve got to be better so that he can go out there and show what he can do, because he can do it."

While he hasn't necessarily lived up to the expectations, Smith still thinks Jeanty has the talent to be a force in the pros.

"He showed it in the NFL. He can do it. He’s running guys over, making guys miss. We’ve just got to open up space for him. I’ve got to get some better checks, get some better run calls, so that he can go out there and showcase what he’s capable of," Smith added.

Through three games, the Boise State product totaled 47 carries for 144 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown, adding five receptions on six targets for three yards.
