Raiders hit game-winning field goal to beat COVID decimated Browns

The Las Vegas Raiders avoided disaster when kicker Daniel Carlson hit a 48-yard field goal as time expired to give the team a 16-14 win over the Cleveland Browns.

Nick Mullens got the start at quarterback for the Browns with Baker Mayfield and Case Keenum both on the COVID/Reserve list. The lengthy list of Cleveland players out of action also included Kareem Hunt, Jarvis Landry, and Jedrick Wills, among several others. The Browns' outbreak of COVID forced the game -- which was originally scheduled for Saturday -- to be postponed two days and played Monday instead.

Cleveland struggled to find points on offense and didn't get on the board until late in the third quarter when Nick Chubb broke free for a 4-yard score. A quarter later, Mullens led a 14-play, 80-yard touchdown drive capped by a fourth down touchdown pass to Harrison Bryant with less than four minutes left on the clock.

Raiders quarterback Derek Carr was intercepted by Greedy Williams on a deep pass on the ensuing possession, but a stop gave Las Vegas one more chance to take the lead back. Carr led the Raiders into Cleveland territory with 12- and 15-yard completions in the last 30 seconds to set up Carlson's game-winner.

The win was a must-have for the Raiders, who would've been all but out of contention with a loss and instead improved to 7-7 with the victory. The Browns are now also 7-7 after the loss and the two teams are among a bevy of teams in the AFC vying for three wild card berths.

For now, three 8-6 teams -- the Indianapolis Colts, Los Angeles Chargers, and Buffalo Bills -- occupy those spots with three weeks to play. The 8-6 Baltimore Ravens are currently on the outside looking in. Cleveland and Las Vegas are two of the five seven-win teams in the conference.
