Raiders' Kirk Cousins, Fernando Mendoza hit with reality check

The Las Vegas Raiders have a full season of football on the way, and fans are pumped to see this team on the field with veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins and rookie Fernando Mendoza.

The reality is that a quarterback is only as good as the offensive players around him. Sure, there are some quarterbacks that have been able to pull off incredible plays even with a weak offense. But it's not easy, and it's not the norm.

So, going into the new season, even if the Raiders have the best quarterback combination in the league, they also need good targets around them.

Raiders have a major problem at wide receiver

One NFL analyst said this is a huge problem for the Raiders. Jared Dubin of CBS Sports has a ranking out on Friday that lists every team's wide receiver room, from best to worst.

Dubin ranks the Raiders' wide receiver room No. 31 on the tally. Yeah, that's not great. The only team worse is the Miami Dolphins.

"The Raiders are lucky the Dolphins exist. The top options in this room are Tre Tucker and Jalen Nailor, along with potentially Jack Bech and rookie Malik Benson," Dubin said. "It's not an inspiring group."

Let's look at those top options. Tucker's last season brought 57 receptions for 696 receiving yards and five touchdowns. For Nailor, the former Michigan State product had 29 receptions for 444 yards and four touchdowns. These really are decent numbers, but they also don't jump off the page.

Raiders fans should hope that Cousins and Mendoza somehow develop a real chemistry with Tucker and Nailor, because that will go a long way.
