The Las Vegas Raiders are ready to kick off a new chapter of their history.
Klint Kubiak will take the reins as their new head coach and, barring a shocking turn of events, they will also have a rookie quarterback leading the way.
Fernando Mendoza is the odds-on favorite to go No. 1 in this year's NFL Draft and has been the overwhelming favorite for months now.
Nevertheless, the Raiders' new head coach isn't so sure yet. Regardless of projections, he's going to do his due diligence on other candidates.
“The resources that the Raiders have — this building, having cap space, having the first pick — those all go into the decision,” Kubiak said. “As far as who the first pick is gonna be, we have a lot of tape to watch to before we determine who that’s gonna be. I’m excited to get into that process.”
Of course, it's not that he was going to say anything different. The Raiders will probably consider a couple of other options, including trading the pick for a star, but any outcome different from them taking Mendoza seems like a long shot.
Mendoza isn't the most polished prospect or the guy with the highest upside by any means, and this draft class is admittedly underwhelming.
That said, the Raiders are in desperate need for a signal-caller, and with an offensive-minded head coach now pulling the strings, Mendoza looks like the safest bet.
