With the season quickly heading down the tubes at 2-7, the Las Vegas Raiders knew that change was inevitable.
On Friday, a day after falling to the Denver Broncos 10-7 on Thursday Night Football, the Raiders have made the decision to fire special teams coordinator Tom McMahon.
The #Raiders have fired Special Teams Coordinator Tom McMahon, per me and @TomPelissero.

During the game, McMahon engaged in a verbal altercation with head coach Pete Carroll on the sidelines.
McMahon was one of the few holdovers from former head coach Antonio Pierce’s coaching staff that remained with Carroll, but special teams has been an issue this season. Kicker Daniel Carlson has regressed, punter AJ Cole has had multiple punts blocked, and the coverage units have been susceptible to penalties and major returns against. While the group has not held some of the more noteworthy concerns, it was clear that changes have to be made.
However, this change does lead to further questions about the coaching staff.
Carroll himself has drawn some doubts about whether his coaching style can help turn things around, and the struggles with his team so far this season have only amplified those concerns. Offensive coordinator Chip Kelly has also drawn issues, with his offense producing less per game than last year’s unit which saw a midseason change at offseason coordinator. It has become clear that this season has unveiled major issues that either cropped up or were not adequately addressed.
McMahon is the first coach to get the axe, and this season suggests that another overhaul is coming.
