Raiders offensive weapon not losing starting role without a fight

Despite investing premier draft capital at the offensive skill positions in recent years, the Las Vegas Raiders have still yet to find success on that side of the ball.

Brock Bowers seems to be a sign of that luck turning around, however, and the Raiders are continuing to hedge their bets on young talent. The infusion of youth, however, risked pushing out players who were once considered part of the future. 2023 draft picks in tight end Michael Mayer and wide receiver Tre Tucker were at risk with the young players coming in, and both needed strong offseasons to keep their spots secure.

Mayer’s rise this offseason has already been well-documented, and the first week of training camp has seen Tucker make a similar leap.

Tucker has emerged as one of the Raiders’ best playmakers in training camp.

Over the past few days of training camp, Tucker has gotten plenty of time working with the first-team offense.

Friday and Sunday’s practices were standout performances from Tucker. According to The Athletic’s Tashan Reed, quarterback Geno Smith connected with Tucker on touchdowns in back-to-back practices.

This is exactly what Tucker needed to stand out, with Jakobi Meyers looking set as the top receiver on the depth chart and rookies Jack Bech and Dont’e Thornton Jr. having strong offseasons as well.

Tucker has not had the start to his NFL career that many envisioned, recording only 66 catches for 870 yards and five touchdowns in his first two seasons. Some of the struggles can be attributed to questionable quarterback play, but it still put Tucker in some danger. He did improve significantly last season, however, and it appears as though that momentum is carrying over to the offseason.

If Tucker continues his upwards trajectory, the Raiders could go from one of the more questionable receiving rooms in the league to one of the deepest in the blink of an eye.
