The overhaul of the Las Vegas Raiders defense has been one of the biggest storylines in the first offseason of head coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Spytek.
Several key players from the 2024 defense have gone elsewhere, most notably towards the back of the defense. Linebackers Robert Spillane and Divine Deablo, as well as slot cornerback Nate Hobbs, all signed elsewhere during free agency, while cornerback Jack Jones was waived in April. The Raiders have tried to patch things up through free agency and the draft, but analysts still have questions regarding the secondary.
Fortunately, a team might have given them the chance to rectify the issue.
On Monday, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Green Bay Packers released cornerback Jaire Alexander, making him a free agent.

When releasing a list of potential landing spots for Alexander, Pro Football Focus’ Trevor Sikkema threw the Raiders as a prospective destination.
“Carroll knows how to build an elite secondary, as evidenced by the Legion of Boom during his time in Seattle. He is also known as a player’s coach and someone who can handle big-personality players,” Sikkema wrote.
“Despite playing in a tough division, we know the Raiders are in on competing now since they traded for quarterback Geno Smith. Their secondary could use some help, too, after Jakorian Bennett was the 2024 cornerback group’s highest-graded player in coverage at just 61.0. The team’s 30.4 PFF coverage grade was also by far the worst mark in the NFL in 2024. Las Vegas brought in Eric Stokes in free agency and drafted Darien Porter, but Alexander would be an immediate, proven starter for the Raiders.”
Alexander has a history of strong play with two second-team All-Pro honors to his name, but injuries have proved to be an issue for the talented cornerback.
Over the past four seasons, Alexander has only played in more than seven games once, and he has only played in 14 games over the last two years. However, the Raiders still lack a top cornerback in their secondary, and the jury is out on whether free agent addition Eric Stokes or third-round rookie Darien Porter can provide immediate relief. While the team would be banking on Alexander staying healthy, the Raiders would prefer to add an option on their roster for free rather than have to surrender assets for someone like Jalen Ramsey.
Alexander will have his choice for his next team, so the Raiders will have to see if they match what he is looking for.
