Raiders' Rookie CB Bennett Being Teachable Early On
USA TODAY Sports

Las Vegas Raiders rookie cornerback Jakorian Bennett has been showing off his raw athleticism and explosiveness throughout training camp.

Bennett, a fourth-round pick out of Maryland, has a chance to earn a significant amount of snaps during his rookie season with wide open snaps to be had at cornerback.

In preparation to take on this big responsibility as a rookie, Bennett has been trying to learn as much as he can from veteran players like fellow cornerback Marcus Peters and wide receiver Davante Adams.

Bennett’s ability to be teachable is a unique trait for a rookie and can have great benefits later on in his career. He addressed the media at training camp and spoke about being teachable.

“Nah, I’m just like, – someone told me: ‘A dumb question is a question never asked.’ So, I just like to ask questions because Davante [Adams] is arguably one of the best receivers, so I just try to get his knowledge. Like, what kind of gives him trouble, what can I do to kind of elevate my game. And then with MP [Marcus Peters], he’s a ball hawk. I think he has like 32 career interceptions. So, I just try to pick his brain to see how I can kind of slow the game down and just try to make plays like how he did. I love asking questions. I try not to ask too many questions though, but they have open ears and they’re willing to answer any question.”

For Bennett to learn from someone like Peters, a two-time First-Team All-Pro, that information can be incredibly valuable.

Bennett is playing what is arguably the toughest position in football for a rookie to produce immediately as a cornerback, so having Peters, who won Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2015 will help him learn what it takes to be successful almost immediately.

Bennett also has the opportunity to match up with one of the league’s best receivers in Davante Adams and learn what it takes to survive against elite NFL receivers.

While Bennett likely won’t face anyone of Adams’ caliber because of how special Adams is, he will still face several good ones, and he will be better for it after matching up with Adams in practice every day.

The Silver and Black open the preseason by hosting the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, Aug. 13, at 4 p.m. EDT/1 p.m. PDT.
