Raiders set to make their preseason debut against Seahawks

For the first time in a long time, the Las Vegas Raiders are back in action.

On Thursday, the Raiders head off to Lumen Field to face the Seattle Seahawks in their first preseason game.

With both teams preparing for the regular season, here are a few storylines worth paying attention to before the action unfolds.

Return of the king

For the Raiders, the game against Seattle could be more emotionally charged for some members.

Head coach Pete Carroll lead the Seahawks over the best stretch in franchise history from 2010-23, including a Super Bowl victory over the Denver Broncos in 2013. Quarterback Geno Smith and linebacker Jamal Adams are also making their return to Seattle during the game. While Smith is expected to start the game, it is uncertain how many series he will play, so Seahawks fans will enjoy watching him back under center while they can.

Different looks

Unlike the Raiders, the Seahawks have already said they will not be playing their starters in this contest.

This will still end up as a good test for the Raiders, however, who will have their defense go up against veteran Drew Lock and third-round rookie Jalen Milroe. Lock provides the more calming presence in the pocket, while Milroe’s scouting report during the draft was how much of a playmaking threat he is with his cannon arm and his legs. Regardless of which quarterback the Seahawks bring out, it gives defensive coordinator Patrick Graham the opportunity to see how his unit fares against two different types of quarterback, so expect him to plan and adjust accordingly.

Opportunity abound

The Raiders will be playing at least most of their starters early, but there will still be plenty of playing time for players trying to make their case for a roster spot.

Outside of sixth overall pick Ashton Jeanty, members of the Raiders’ 2025 draft class will see varying workloads throughout the preseason. Meanwhile, undrafted free agents such as edge rusher Jah Joyner and cornerback Greedy Vance are hoping to make a positive impression to land a spot on the 53-man roster. Whatever the situation is, the Raiders have plenty of young players on their roster who will be aiming to make a strong showing against the Seahawks.
