Raiders Sign Speedy Former Chargers Third-Round Pick to Contract

The Las Vegas Raiders' cornerback room is one of the biggest concerns heading into training camp. The team is relying on a lot of young players to take on large roles.

To add some depth, the Raiders are signing former Los Angeles Chargers cornerback Joe Woods to a contract, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Woods isn't a big name for Las Vegas to add. He was a third-round pick of the Chargers in 2022 and was drafted by former Raiders general manager Tom Telesco. He was never able to carve out a serious role in Los Angeles.

He lasted two seasons with the team before getting let go. Woods spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears last season, but didn't play in a single regular-season game.

He was with the Seattle Seahawks briefly this offseason, but was released early in July. Woods is a very athletic player. He ran a 4.36 40-yard dash when he was coming into the NFL. He also has good size at 6-foot-2.

He's exactly the type of cornerback that Pete Carroll likes to work with, and he should fit in well with the Raiders' group of big and fast defensive backs. Carroll does excellent work with defensive backs, so perhaps he can get Woods to reach another level.

He has only played 13 career games. He hasn't had much of a chance to prove what he can do. The Raiders are very young at cornerback and will have an open competition, so he'll at least get an opportunity to earn a roster spot.
