Laughing at the Raiders might be Kansas City Chiefs fans' favorite past time. It literally never gets old. While the Raiders have sadly put together a pretty respectable offseason so far, a recent report from Albert Breer indicated that the Raiders tried to offer a lucrative deal for Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford.
If you've been paying attention to the offseason, you'll know that Stafford chose to re-sign with the Rams, much to the delight of Chiefs fans. Breer reported that in doing so, Stafford left $20 million on the table.
"With the Raiders and Giants willing to exceed $100 million over the next two years, he walked away from around $20 million stay in California. You can say, Well, look how much he’s made already! But $20 million is $20 million. And so that makes this a little like the final deals that Peyton Manning, Drew Brees and Tom Brady signed—where those guys took a little less to stay put."
That's right -- Stafford would rather pass on $20 million than play for the Raiders. Absolute hilarity!
Considering the Broncos and Chargers have slowly but surely gotten their stuff together in recent years, the last thing Chiefs fans want to see is a competent Raiders organization. It's been nice being able to depend on the Raiders being the bottom feeders of the division for quite some time now and Stafford would have given them a nice boost.
Stafford isn't the same quarterback he was a few years ago but he'd have given the Raiders something they haven't had in quite some time and that's a reliable guy at the most important position. Knowing he turned down extra money from them to stay with the Rams and out of the Chiefs' division is music to Chiefs Kingdom's ears, that's for sure.
Now the Raiders have to see what Geno Smith can do for them over the next few years until they try (and hopefully fail) to find a Patrick Mahomes of their own.
