Reigning MVP Matthew Stafford and his Los Angeles Rams lost at SoFi Stadium on Monday night despite a line of 40-of-54 for 383 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. The Buffalo Bills took the 37-34 overtime win after Greg Rousseau blocked a Harrison Mevis field goal and Tyler Bass connected from 45 yards.

The defeat dropped the Rams to 2-3 and added to the uneven picture of the 38-year-old’s season. He has thrown for 1,572 yards through five games and topped 300 yards four weeks running, though nine touchdowns against six interceptions are a far cry from the 46 touchdown passes behind his first MVP award last season.

Even so, Monday did not leave the veteran empty-handed, because several of his career totals moved up the NFL’s all-time lists. The Rams highlighted one of them the following day, and it happens to put their quarterback ahead of a former league MVP, which gives the loss a more notable side.

On Tuesday, the Rams announced that Monday marked Stafford’s 80th career game with at least 300 passing yards, postseason included. That moved him past Matt Ryan, who had 79, and into fourth place in NFL history.

The night also made him the first passer to reach 150 touchdown passes with two franchises, and his 68 regular-season games with three or more touchdown passes rank sixth all-time.

The longtime Falcons star won MVP in 2016, led Atlanta to Super Bowl LI, retired with 62,792 passing yards and 381 touchdowns, and returned this year as the Falcons’ president of football operations.

The Rams will host the Arizona Cardinals at SoFi Stadium next Sunday at 4:05 p.m. ET.
