Rams blocked Jets from adding quarterback to roster

The New York Jets are committed to Zach Wilson as their starting quarterback in the wake of the Aaron Rodgers injury, but that is not going to stop them from trying to add more depth at the position.

They tried to do that this week when they made an attempt to add Brett Rypien from the Los Angeles Rams' practice squad, only to have the Rams promote Rypien to their active roster, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. 

Rypien will serve as the Rams' backup quarterback following the absence of rookie Stetson Bennett. 

The Rams probably would have waited until later in the week to promote Rypien to the active roster, but did not want to risk losing him to a Jets team that is now in need of depth.

This is Rypien's fourth year in the league, and the Jets' interest in him likely comes from the fact he played under offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett in Denver during the 2022 season.

Rypien has started three games in his career -- all with the Broncos -- and has thrown only four touchdowns to eight interceptions. 

The addition of Rodgers was supposed to completely transform the Jets' offense and make them a Super Bowl contender in the AFC. They have the defensive and skill position players to compete, but quarterback was the one thing that held them back a year ago. They went into the 2022 season with Wilson as their starter, but he had a miserable year and showed almost no progress. 

Rodgers was injured just four snaps into his Jets tenure on Monday night when he suffered a season-ending Achilles tendon injury. 

Wilson came off the bench and helped lead the Jets to a come-from-behind win over the Buffalo Bills. 

With Rodgers injured Wilson is technically the only quarterback on the Jets' active roster, so they will need to add somebody before Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys. It just won't be Rypien.
