Rams Face New Uncertainty After Latest Injury Update

The Los Angeles Rams’ 38-37 overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks was painful enough on its own. At 11-4, the defeat could loom large in the NFC playoff seeding race. But the fallout extended beyond the scoreboard, as the Rams now await clarity on the status of one of their most important players.

Sixth-year right guard Kevin Dotson suffered an ankle injury early in the divisional matchup and did not return. After the game, Dotson was seen using crutches and wearing a walking boot on his left foot, according to Adam Grosbard of the Los Angeles Daily News and Orange County Register.

Head coach Sean McVay later shared an update on Dotson, “Yeah, he got his ankle — it might need some time. We’ll see. He’s dealing with a pretty significant ankle sprain, so we’ll see exactly what that means. I think his status could be in doubt for the Falcons game.”

Dotson’s Importance Goes Beyond the Box Score

Despite losing Dotson in the first half, the Rams’ offense still produced eye-popping numbers. Matthew Stafford threw for 457 yards and three touchdowns, while Puka Nacua erupted for 12 receptions, 225 yards, and two scores. Still, those fireworks shouldn’t minimize what Dotson means to this offense.

Dotson has arguably been the Rams’ best offensive lineman in 2025, playing at an All-Pro level. His impact is felt both in pass protection and the run game, where his 6-foot-4, 328-pound frame and sound technique consistently create space for Kyren Williams and Blake Corum.

Entering the Seattle game, Dotson had allowed just two sacks and 12 total pressures on 490 pass-blocking snaps this season, per Pro Football Focus — an elite 2.45 percent pressure rate. Stafford’s MVP-caliber production has been aided by that level of interior stability.

Sean McVay Praises Justin Dedich’s Performance

When Dotson exited, Justin Dedich stepped in at right guard, and his performance drew praise from McVay afterward.

“And then Justin Dedich coming in at right guard for Kevin the other night — just what you make of what he brought?” McVay was asked.

“It’s been consistent with what he’s been about,” McVay said. “This guy’s always just kind of delivered. Game’s not too big for him. He’s tough. He plays tough, he plays physical, he’s a great communicator, he understands the intent of what we’re trying to get done. I thought he was really productive in both phases.

“If Kevin’s not able to go, we’ll obviously miss Kevin a bunch, but in the meantime, it’s a real luxury to have a guy that’s had as much experience in his first two years as Justin has and plays winning football for us.”

What the Numbers Say About a Possible Replacement

Dedich’s development backs up McVay’s confidence. His pressure rate has improved from 5.77 percent in 2024 to 4.48 percent in 2025, and he has yet to allow a sack across his first two seasons. In the run game, the Rams are averaging 4.68 yards per carry with Dedich on the field this year, a notable improvement from 2024.

Still, replacing Dotson is no small task. Dotson has logged significantly more snaps and remains the superior pass protector, while Dedich has shown encouraging growth as a run blocker.

Waiting on the Next Update

The Rams will have extra time before their next game on December 29 against the Atlanta Falcons, giving Dotson a chance to recover. Until then, the uncertainty surrounding his ankle injury may linger just as heavily as the sting of a loss that could shape the Rams’ postseason path.
