Sometimes, despite the greatness of a quarterback, the sturdiness of the run game or the dominance of wide receivers and tight ends in the pass game, none of it matters.

Certain situations come up in an NFL game when only a field goal will win it. That's what makes a dependable kicker so valuable.

The Rams have struggled to find one since Greg Zuerlein left for the Dallas Cowboys in 2020 after eight seasons with the organization, and the search continued after Matt Gay left for the Indianapolis Colts in free agency.

Undrafted free agent Harrison Mevis has become the next answer at the position, connecting on 92.3 percent (12-for-13) of his field goals last season; the only miss came from the 40-49-yard range. Mevis was perfect on all his extra points (39-for-39) over the regular season and remained perfect on field goals through the NFC Championship.

Mevis' 50-plus-yard field goal last season came in Week 12 in the 34-7 regular-season victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and while speaking with reporters this week ahead of Saturday's preseason opener, head coach Sean McVay sounded pleased with the kicker.

"He's been great,” McVay said. “He's just so steady. It doesn't seem like anything phases him, which is a great trait to have as a kicker. He's been really good in a lot of the competitive or the different periods that we've done. He had a really good day today when we activated the field goal unit in the middle of practice. He's got a nice personality about him, and his demeanor and disposition are what you want from your kicker. We expect him to pick up where he left off. He did an amazing job for us last year.”

The Rams had a high-powered offense last season, leading the league in total yards and points scored. That explains the lack of field goal attempts by Mevis; however, entering 2026, with another roster fully capable of scoring 30-plus points a week, the Rams will still need a dependable kicker in certain situations during the season, when only a kicker can bring home the win.

That's why Mevis has become vital for the special teams group.
