For most of the season, Myles Garrett’s return was something Sean McVay wouldn’t put a timeline on. On Friday, the Los Angeles Rams coach said he expects Garrett to play Sunday against the Washington Commanders, barring any setbacks.

That puts Garrett and Aaron Donald on the field together for the first time. Garrett returned to practice this week after injuring his knee in the Week 1 loss to the 49ers, and he told reporters Friday the injury didn’t come from one specific play. It “just cascaded,” he said.

A pass rush stuck at 12 sacks

Garrett already knows what the pairing should force offenses to do. “I think offenses really have to pick their poison. Who’s going to be freed up this play? I think either of us are pretty good at winning one-on-one, so we’ll have some fun,” Garrett said, per the Rams’ Stu Jackson.

Los Angeles has 12 sacks through eight games, and Byron Young owns 4.5 of them. No other Ram has more than two. Garrett had 23 by himself with Cleveland last season, almost twice what the entire Rams defense has managed so far.

Donald hasn’t recorded a sack in six games since his return, but PFF credits him with 11 pressures and a 74.4 pass-rush grade that ranks 13th among 128 interior defenders. He has been getting close without getting home, and Garrett drawing the attention of a tackle and a back should give him cleaner paths to the quarterback.

Washington will test that pairing with Jayden Daniels, whose legs are the Commanders’ best weapon against a Rams defense ranked third in EPA. The Rams, who have won two straight to get back to 4-4, will counter with two players who have 236.5 career sacks between them. On Monday, we wrote that help was on the way, and Sunday is the first chance to see how much.
