The Los Angeles Rams have officially reassigned the No. 10 jersey, once worn by franchise legend Cooper Kupp, to newly signed wide receiver Britain Covey. The move marks a symbolic transition for the Rams, as Kupp departs after an illustrious tenure that included a Super Bowl MVP performance and multiple record-breaking seasons.
Kupp, now with the Seattle Seahawks, leaves behind a legacy that will be difficult to replicate. Over his eight seasons with the Rams, the Eastern Washington product amassed 7,776 receiving yards and 58 touchdowns. His 2021 campaign was one for the ages, as he led the league in receptions, yards, and touchdowns to eventually earn Offensive Player of the Year honors.
Covey, meanwhile, arrives in Los Angeles with a different skill set. Primarily known as a return specialist, the former Philadelphia Eagle led the NFL in punt return yards in 2023 with 417 yards. Though his receiving numbers are modest, 11 career receptions for 76 yards, Covey’s ability to flip field position could prove valuable for the Rams’ special teams unit.
The decision to hand over Kupp’s former number is a reminder of the NFL's ever-changing nature. While Kupp’s departure left a void in the Rams’ receiving corps, the team has made moves to bolster the position, including acquiring Davante Adams and drafting Konata Mumpfield.
As Covey takes the field in No. 10, Rams fans will undoubtedly feel the absence of Kupp. But in a league where rosters evolve rapidly, the number on the jersey is just that, a number. The legacy behind it, however, remains etched in Rams history.
