The Los Angeles Rams have officially listed Matthew Stafford as 'week-to-week' while he continues to nurse a lingering back injury.
Given the timeline, it seems improbable that he'll suit up for any of their first two preseason games, or perhaps at all.
Nevertheless, NFL insider Albert Breen believes that's not necessarily a bad thing for Sean McVay's team, as they're just trying to keep him fresh for when it counts. Moreover, they have the utmost confidence in Jimmy Garoppolo.
"They think Jimmy is a starting-level quarterback," Breer said on The Rich Eisen Show. "They view Jimmy as a viable starting option. The reason that's relevant now is because they can go out and have confident practices where their veterans get good work with Jimmy there and with Matthew saving the bullets in his gun."

Breer explained that the Rams have come to the realization that their 37-year-old signal-caller doesn't have that many more bullets left, and they would rather have him sit out during training camp as opposed to having to do maintenance work with him throughout the course of the season.
He also revealed that Garoppolo was on their shortlist of potential replacements for Stafford if they traded him in the offseason, adding that he was their second choice behind Aaron Rodgers.
It's never ideal to have your starting quarterback miss crucial reps in training camp, but Stafford is a proven veteran, and he's already familiar with the offensive system and his teammates. Per ESPN insider Adam Scheffter, the Rams don't seem to be too concerned about him taking a breather now:
“He still hasn’t practiced in training camp, but the Rams do not sound concerned. This sounds more like a maintenance issue where they’re being smart with their 37-year-old QB, who they feel like doesn’t need the work necessarily right now. And they feel like if there were a game today, Stafford would be able to play,” Schefter said.
Stafford drew a reputation for being one of the toughest quarterbacks in the game, often playing through injury even if his team wasn't in the mix for a playoff spot.
Even so, he's not getting any younger, and Father Time is ruthless. He missed almost half of the season a couple of years ago, and with the end of his career getting closer by the day, the Rams are doing the right thing by making sure he stays fresh and healthy for when it matters the most.
As for Garoppolo, he's also been there for a year now, and he should be more than capable of holding down the fort if needed.
