The Philadelphia Eagles used the tush push seven times in their 20-17 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, but Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay thinks the play will look different in Week 3.
Replays of the tush push on Sunday appeared to show the Eagles jumping offside, giving the offensive line a huge advantage on the play. Philadelphia head coach Nick Sirianni didn't admit to having his guys jump offside, but knows he'll have to switch up the play's operation in Week 3.
On Monday, Rams head coach Sean McVay told the media that he'd have conversations about the tush push with the NFL's office before their game on Sunday after watching the tape of the Eagles-Chiefs.
“Anytime that you see certain things, you have conversations with the league office to make sure you’re understanding, how is it officiated?," McVay said via Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "How can we coach it? I did see some of those things last night, and that’ll obviously be a big talking point because they’re such a d--- good team and it’s such a successful play for them.
“Those are conversations with the league office, but I’m sure they’ll have the same ones and operate within the confines of not getting a little bit of a rolling start before the ball is snapped.”
One would bet that the league's office will make any jumping offside by the Eagles a point of emphasis in Week 3. The league reportedly asked the Green Bay Packers to propose banning the tush push this year. The measure didn't pass.
While the Eagles are free to call the play, they're not allowed to jump early to get a greater push. The league can crack down on any illegal advantage Philadelphia tries to gain from the play as a means to curb the use of the tush push.
