Rams offer ominous update on QB Matthew Stafford

The Matthew Stafford situation is getting concerning for the Los Angeles Rams, and it is only getting worse following a cryptic report from the front office on Saturday.

According to a report from Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times, a Rams official refused to comment on whether Stafford worked out as scheduled this weekend and said head coach Sean McVay would address the situation on Monday.

Nothing about that is promising for the Rams, and actually, it is quite ominous.

If Stafford did work out, it would be no big deal for the official to say that he did and he is progressing toward getting back on the field. But the fact that they said that McVay would address the situation in a few days certainly paints things in a very different light. That sort of update is usually reserved for bad news.

If Stafford is healthy, he is still one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL and the type of player that can lead a team to the Super Bowl. He already has with the Rams and had them one score away from the NFC Championship game a year ago.

But his health has been the big concern in recent years, and especially now as he deals with another back issue that has kept him off the field.

Jimmy Garoppolo is the Rams' backup.

While he has had some team success in the NFL and quarterbacked the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl, he is not anywhere near the player a healthy Stafford is. He needs a perfect set of circumstances and the right system to win. He is not putting a team on his back and winning games for it.

Stafford does.

At this point, anything is just speculation until McVay speaks. But the longer this drags on, the more cryptic the Rams get, and the closer the season gets, the more problematic it becomes. The Rams should have Super Bowl aspirations this season. Those expectations will dramatically change if Stafford is not there.
