The Los Angeles Rams’ season opener against the Houston Texans turned into a battle of attrition, with multiple starters forced to the sideline in the first half. Among the most significant blows came on the offensive line, where both starting guards were knocked out early.
According to the Associated Press’ Greg Beacham, right guard Kevin Dotson suffered a lateral ankle sprain and is considered week to week. Left guard Steve Avila also sprained his ankle but was able to return to the game. He is also considered week-to-week, per Adam Grosbard. “Both will be evaluated later this week and are possibilities to play vs. the Titans.”
Dotson’s exit was especially concerning given the importance of continuity along the Rams’ interior line. Avila had already been dealing with a back issue prior to kickoff, leaving the coaching staff in scramble mode once Dotson went down. The Rams adjusted by sliding Avila back into his usual left guard spot while rookie Beaux Limmer shifted over to right guard.
It was a difficult assignment against Houston’s aggressive defensive front, particularly with quarterback Matthew Stafford already managing his own lingering health concerns. Protecting the veteran signal-caller is one of the Rams’ top priorities in 2025, and any instability up front threatens that mission.
The offensive line wasn’t the only area hit. Earlier in the second quarter, wide receiver Puka Nacua exited after a hard shot from linebacker Henry To’oto’o, who drew an unnecessary roughness penalty. Nacua, bleeding near his eye, was evaluated for a possible concussion, and his status was left uncertain. Although he did return to action after concussion evaluation. On the same drive, tight end Colby Parkinson also left with a shoulder injury. He played through that injury and it is considered short-term.
At the time of the injuries, Houston held a narrow 3–0 lead with just over 13 minutes remaining in the second quarter at SoFi Stadium.
For Los Angeles, the updates on Dotson and Avila provide some clarity, but the concern now shifts to how quickly the offensive line can stabilize heading into a pivotal stretch of the early season.
