Rams ‘Skeleton Key’ Has ‘Leveled Up’ — Will It Earn Him a Big 2nd Contract?

When the Los Angeles Rams drafted Quentin Lake in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, few expected the UCLA product to become a cornerstone of their defense. Three years later, the former Bruin has developed into what Robert Mays of The Athletic Football Show called the “skeleton key” of the Rams defense — a versatile, intelligent player capable of unlocking multiple roles in coordinator Chris Shula’s scheme.

A True Defensive Swiss Army Knife

“Quinten Lake had an insane game for the Rams,” Mays said. “He had two PBUs, including one at the line of scrimmage, one on third down against Travis Hunter. He had that sack… another play where he rips off the edge and disrupts a dropback as a blitzer. He’s carrying vertical routes, and that’s not going to show up in the stat sheet, but he has really become like a cool skeleton key for this defense.”

Analyst Derrik Klassen echoed that sentiment, noting that Lake has “leveled up” in a way few expected. “When I came into the season worried about the cornerback room, I was probably less worried about him… but he has been the upgrade,” Klassen said. “When you can get some of these bigger guys the way that he’s built, that’s the best way to do it — especially if you’re skimping at linebacker. To have a player who can fill that role as a blitzer, run defender — that’s incredibly valuable.”

Rising From Late-Round Long Shot

Lake’s journey has been defined by perseverance. After opening his rookie season on the PUP list, he struggled early with tackling and coverage before emerging as a steady contributor. Now, in the final year of his rookie contract, he’s not just holding his own — he’s excelling.

On the season, Lake has tallied 45 tackles, 1.5 sacks, nine passes defended, one interception, one forced fumble, and a tackle for loss — production that would make even a first-rounder proud. In a dominant performance against Jacksonville, he registered six tackles, a sack, two PBUs, and a forced fumble, showing both range and physicality.

As teammate Kamren Curl put it: “Man, I’d say my dog Q Lake, man. He’s one of the best underrated DBs in the league. He’s playing nickel, playing safety, playing all around. He’s making a lot of plays… I’m real happy for him.”

A Legacy of Work and Versatility

Lake’s football DNA runs deep. The son of Carnell Lake, a member of the NFL’s 1990s All-Decade Team, Quentin has modeled his professionalism and preparation after his father. “He does everything right,” Curl said. “And just to see that transition to the field on Sundays — I’m real happy for him.”

Head coach Sean McVay has been equally effusive: “I’ve loved everything that he’s about. All you see from Quentin Lake is him just continuing to get better, bringing people with him. He is a Ram, and I love Q.”

Contract Questions Loom

Despite his impact, Lake’s future with the Rams remains uncertain. He’s in the final year of his rookie contract, earning $3.4 million, and the Rams — who have never extended a drafted safety since their 2016 return to Los Angeles — have yet to open negotiations.

“I’m just taking it one day at a time,” Lake said when asked about his contract. “As long as I take care of myself between these white lines, everything will take care of itself.”

Lake understands his value goes beyond stats. “I think my value comes in other ways,” he said. “Versatility, being in the right position, communicating, being able to be the signal-caller if need be. I’m not worried about stats — I’m focused on taking calculated risks and finding ways to make plays on the ball.”

Recognition Finally Arrives

With the Rams sitting among NFC contenders, Lake’s emergence as a defensive centerpiece couldn’t have come at a better time. His combination of intelligence, versatility, and toughness has filled gaps across the defense — and turned him into one of the most indispensable players on the roster.

Whether that earns him a second contract remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: Quentin Lake has already proven he’s far more than a late-round flier — he’s the heartbeat of a Rams defense built on adaptability and grit.
