Over the past couple of years, numerous individuals associated with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have openly discussed how quarterback Baker Mayfield has been the perfect replacement for Tom Brady following Brady's permanent retirement in February 2023.
During Tuesday's edition of the FanDuel TV "Up & Adams" program, Los Angeles Rams star wide receiver Davante Adams shared that Mayfield resembled Brady on multiple occasions during Tampa Bay's come-from-behind win over the Houston Texans this past Monday night.
"I’m a big Baker fan, man, and he earned a lot of respect," Adams said while speaking about the Week 2 "Monday Night Football" game, per the JoeBucs Fan website. "And I don’t want to get carried away as far as the whole picture, but just the attitude, popping up, talking some mess to [defensive players]. That kind of looked like Tom [Brady] a little bit right there [Monday night to Texans safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson], which obviously I love."
Adams was referencing how Mayfield seemed to suffer a leg/ankle injury while completing a run in the fourth quarter of Monday's contest before he popped up to his feet and then talked some trash to Gardner-Johnson. Earlier in the game, Mayfield proudly let Houston pass-rusher Will Anderson Jr. know that Anderson had celebrated making a tackle on a play that resulted in a Tampa Bay first down.
"I love to see a quarterback fired up like that, not afraid to go meet the defense and talk a little mess right in their face like that," Adams added during the segment.
During his legendary career, Brady became known as one of the fiercest competitors of his era as he earned seven Super Bowl rings. Mayfield hasn't yet played in a conference championship game, but he did guide the Buccaneers to a pair of comeback wins to open the ongoing season.
Running back Rachaad White and other Buccaneers players have routinely referred to Mayfield as "a dawg." Adams repeated that praise on Tuesday.
"I think Baker’s a dawg," Adams said while adding that Mayfield is the type of quarterback players want in the lineup.
The 2-0 Buccaneers next host the 0-2 New York Jets this coming Sunday. As of Wednesday morning, ESPN BET had Tampa Bay as a 6.5-point favorite for that matchup.
