Puka Nacua missed Week 2 while dealing with a hip injury separate from the ailment which led to missed time late in training camp. The Rams wideout’s status for Week 3 is unclear at this point, but he will not be rushed back into action.
“When you’re a skill player and you’re really trying to hit high-speed yards and really open up and you feel just… it’s like some of the things that can almost be like pre-hernia is kind of what he’s feeling,” head coach Sean McVay said (via ESPN’s Sarah Barshop).
“And so you err on the side of caution. Usually time is the best thing that allows that thing to heal. And then once you get to a certain point, then I think you feel pretty good moving forward.”
Nacua managed to heal in time for Los Angeles’ season-opening loss in Melbourne. During that contest, the two-time Pro Bowler managed five catches and played 43 offensive snaps. In his absence, the Rams recorded a primetime win over the Giants with Davante Adams carrying the load in the passing game (8-195-2 statline).
McVay clarified that Nacua is not dealing with a hernia, adding there is no threat of a long-term absence in this case. Los Angeles’ estimated practice report for Wednesday listed the 25-year-old as a non-participant, though. Team and player hope for a return in some capacity to the practice field over the next two days. Nacua is “frustrated” with this situation, McVay noted to no surprise.
Another heavy emphasis on Adams during Week 3’s game against the Broncos can of course be expected in the event Nacua is unable to play. While it remains to be seen if a return to action will take place over the coming days, McVay’s update indicates a lengthy spell on the sidelines is unlikely. Especially with that in mind, a cautious approach would be reasonable for a team with Super Bowl aspirations.
