Rams Unsure Of DE Myles Garrett’s Recovery Timeline

As a result, Garrett is headed to injured reserve. Stints on IR require at least four missed games, meaning the surgery will deal a blow to Los Angeles’ defense for a notable stretch. Questions have been raised about the manner in which Garrett’s knee was handled leading up to the season, and head coach Sean McVay spoke on the subject Monday.

“Thought we would take an approach where he’d be feeling good enough to go contribute positive change and be the player that he’s capable of,” McVay said (via ESPN’s Sarah Barshop). “That wasn’t the case. And so the next right thing for us is to be able to get this thing fixed.”

McVay added (via Nate Atkins of The Athletic) no thought was given to keeping Garrett at home for Week 1, as was the team’s approach with Aaron Donald. Los Angeles’ confidence that the situation could be managed has proven to be misplaced, however. McVay noted the team is currently unsure how long Garrett will be sidelined, but the Rams’ remaining pass rushers will be counted on for the foreseeable future.

In June, Garrett was dealt from the Browns to the Rams in a deal which saw Los Angeles part with Jared Verse and three draft picks. The seven-time Pro Bowler is expected to operate as a key figure in 2026 and beyond with the Rams squarely focused on a Super Bowl this season. A cautious approach with respect to a return to action would come as little surprise given Garrett’s importance, but it will be interesting to see how quickly he manages to recover after surgery.

Garrett, 30, has logged double-digit appearances every year to date during his NFL career. He has played at least 14 games every season since 2020, but that level of durability will come to an end even if a return after four weeks proves to be possible.
