One week after being let go as the GM of the Tennessee Titans , Ran Carthon appeared on 104.5 The Zone for an exclusive interview with Ramon, Kayla, and Will.
As Carthon recapped his two years Tennessee, previewed what's to come, and reflected on the lessons he learned in his first GM stint , he also opened up about Titans head coach Brian Callahan.
Carthon was enthusiastic about hiring Callahan last offseason. He felt that Callahan had what it takes to lead an NFL locker room and design a modern NFL offense. Carthon is still bullish on Callahan's abilities after being let go by Tennessee.
"I really truly believe in Cally and what he can do as the coach. I know he’ll be much better next year," Carthon told Kayla Anderson and Ramon Foster on Monday morning. "You would have had to be there to understand how he works diligently at his job every single day to have a plan every single week and to have a plan moving forward. I really believe in him and wish him nothing but the best."
Even after a rough 3-14 season, Callahan and Carthon have a really strong relationship. The firing and behind-the-scenes politics are much different this time around than they were last year. There was no power struggle between the GM and the head coach, There was no butting of heads. The conflict seems to come higher up in the Titans organization, but Brian Callahan is not ruffling feathers.
"We had a great relationship. He’s a guys guy. He’s a football coach," said Carthon, who added that Callahan has a fiery side to him despite his calm outwardly demeanor.
From everything Chad Brinker and Amy Adams Strunk have said since firing Carthon, it seems they are buying in to Brian Callahan as well. The goal is to remain patient and let Cally build a culture and roster that can execute the style of football he what's to play. Can ownership actually remain patient and stick to that plan? That remains to be seen.
