Former Philadelphia Eagles second-round draft pick quarterback Randall Cunningham never reached the Super Bowl during his playing career, even though he led the team to seven postseason appearances.
But in February, Cunningham finally experienced the big game, as a fan in New Orleans, where he lived out a Super Bowl victory vicariously through current quarterback Jalen Hurts.
In a recent interview with The Athletic, Cunningham shared the text message he sent Hurts following the team's 40-22 historic Super Bowl LIX win over the Kansas City Chiefs.
"What I didn’t fulfill, I’m fulfilling through you,” Cunningham wrote.
Randall Cunningham. Jalen Hurts.

Similar to Hurts, Cunningham was one of the most exciting quarterbacks to ever play the game, especially during his time in Philly. He could beat you with his arm or his legs, throwing for over 29,000 yards and 207 touchdowns while also rushing for nearly 5,000 yards and 35 more scores.
To this day, Cunningham still ranks 5th all-time in rushing yards by a quarterback, racking up 4,928 yards over 161 games.
However, Hurts has passed Cunningham in a few big ways when it comes to rewriting the Eagles' franchise history books. In 2023, Hurts broke Cunningham’s record for the most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in team history with 35, and it's important to note that he is still adding to that total. He also set a new franchise record for most total touchdowns in a single season with 36.
Funny enough, while Cunningham was once criticized for being too athletic for a quarterback, Hurts is now praised for using that very same skill set to dominate the modern game.
It just goes to show how much the quarterback position has evolved since Cunningham entered the league in 1985.
