Randy Moss: Patriots offense will be 'a lot more fun' with Cam Newton

Cam Newton signing with the New England Patriots still doesn't feel real, but many analysts are already weighing in on the one-year deal.

One of those analysts is none other than former Patriot Randy Moss, who spent two-plus seasons playing with Tom Brady, and he thinks the New England offense is about to be a lot less boring.

“Have fun within the offense," Moss said on ESPN's "Get Up" Wednesday, according to USA Today. "That’s one thing I want Cam Newton to understand. He can get back to having fun. He can get back to smiling, having fun with the fans. That’s what the offense in New England is gonna be able to give him. The guys are excited to have a guy like Cam Newton, being able to (be) an athletic and mobile quarterback, that’s something the Patriots haven’t seen in a long time.

“I just think what we have seen coming out of New England for the past, let’s say 20 years, there is going to be a change in New England. But I think we are going to see them have a lot more fun out there, and Cam Newton is going to give them that opportunity for the fans, not just the New England Patriots fans, but the football fans around the world to really see how fun this offense can really be.”

Newton, who was released by the Panthers in March, certainly would love to become New England's starter in the post-Tom Brady era, but he wasn't guaranteed the position, according to The Athletic's Jeff Howe. 

The former Carolina Panthers signal-caller will be joining Jarrett Stidham, Brian Hoyer, J'Mar Smith and Brian Lewerke on the Patriots' quarterback depth chart. So, it's become quite clear that there will be a quarterback competition once training camp opens up next month.

The 31-year-old played just two games last season after suffering a foot injury and wasn't great during the 2018 campaign, so it remains to be seen whether or not he has enough gas left in the tank.

If Newton beats out Stidham, it won't be that surprising — especially because he's made 124 career starts, has a Super Bowl appearance and was the league's MVP in 2015.
