Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice left the Week 4 game with a hamstring injury and did not return. The Chiefs had a bye week at the ideal time for him, but he came out of the bye week unable to practice Wednesday.
Along with Rice’s injury, fellow receiver Tyquan Thornton suffered a dislocated ankle and was placed on Injured Reserve. The Chiefs signed former Chief Justin Watson to the practice squad. Watson spent three seasons with KC, totaling 64 catches for 1,064 yards and seven touchdowns. Watson won a Super Bowl with the Chiefs in 2023. He played in all four playoff games and caught six passes for 90 yards in that Super Bowl run. He played three games with the Houston Texans in 2025 and tallied just three catches for 30 yards. He failed to make the Texans’ roster in 2026.
Rice still has a couple of days to return to practice in order to be ready for the Los Angeles Chargers Sunday. If he can’t go, more will be asked of young receivers Jalen Royals and Cyrus Allen.
Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes on Cyrus Allen and the rest of the WRs after injuries to No. 2 and No. 4: “They’ve put in the work. Obviously, we’ve had guys in front of them… Now their number gets called… I have a lot of trust and confidence in them. We’ll continue to push it…

Royals, a second-year man from Utah State, has three catches for 17 yards and a touchdown on five targets this season. Allen, a fifth-round rookie, impressed in training camp. He has yet to catch a pass on two targets this season. More will also be asked of Xavier Worthy, who had his best game of the season in Week 4 with four catches for 70 yards.
