Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has confirmed that his breakout wide receiver Rashee Rice will participate in the team's training camp this week, despite Rice's ongoing legal situation that stems from a high-speed crash in Dallas last year.
Rice plead guilty to collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing serious bodily injury last week. He was placed on a five-year probation period and was sentenced to 30 days of jail time after the third-degree felonies. However, he has the choice of serving his time anytime within the probation period.
This, of course, preludes any potential league-issued punishment for violating various conduct policies. Many initial reports fear a multi-game suspension, but that has yet to be confirmed with a formal ruling by the NFL.
Until then, it is business usual - or as usual can get - for the third-year receiver.
“We’re going to progress as normal with [Rice],” Reid said, via The Athletic. “He’ll go in and take all the reps that he’ll normally take. We always rotate that position, so depending on what happens here with the future, whoever needs to play will step in and know what they are doing and be in good shape to do it.”
In the meantime, the Chiefs have filled out their 90-man training camp roster by signing undrafted rookie free agent Hal Presley. He was cut by the Buffalo Bills after rookie minicamp earlier this offseason. The Baylor product had 31 receptions for 429 yards and three touchdowns last college football season.
Kansas City also recently waived once-promising receiver prospect Justyn Ross ahead of training camp. The receiving corps is set to feature Xavier Worthy, Marquis "Hollywood" Brown, Travis Kelce and Rice all at full strength this year - upon Rice's return from a likely suspension to start the season.
Rice is looking to return to top form on the field after suffering a torn LCL in his right knee during Kansas City's Week 4 game in 2024. He was limited to just 288 yards last season season after becoming one of Patrick Mahomes' top targets with 938 yards and seven touchdowns as a rookie.
