Ravens Are Giving Jovaughn Gwyn A Shot At Center

Gwyn joined Baltimore after spending the previous three seasons in Atlanta, where he worked with current Ravens offensive line coach Dwayne Ledford. That familiarity with Ledford’s blocking techniques and run-game principles appears to have helped Gwyn adjust quickly in Baltimore. It also raises an interesting question about what exactly the Ravens are getting from a lineman developed in Atlanta’s system.

Atlanta leaned heavily on outside runs during Gwyn’s time with the team. In a 2025 Falcons article reviewing the running backs, the team noted that 68% of Atlanta’s early-down runs in 2024 went outside the tackle box, according to Next Gen Stats. The Falcons also suggested that tendency may have stemmed in part from an offensive line that had grown comfortable with outside-run concepts under Dwayne Ledford.

Gwyn was part of that unit and remained in Atlanta for another season, giving him plenty of experience in an outside-focused run scheme. Baltimore may not lean on those concepts quite as heavily with Derrick Henry, who is more of a downhill, north-south runner, but the veteran still has enough speed and vision to turn well-blocked outside runs into chunk gains.

The transition may be less straightforward in pass protection. Gwyn spent his time in Atlanta blocking for quarterbacks such as Kirk Cousins and Michael Penix Jr., whose styles differ considerably from Jackson’s. Protecting a quarterback who can extend plays and become a rushing threat will require some adjustment, along with plenty of reps with the two-time MVP.
