Ravens Face a Dangerous Passing Mismatch Against Jaguars

Lately, the Baltimore Ravens have been picked apart on the defensive side of the field, first by Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals, then by Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills. This trend is at risk of continuing against the Jacksonville Jaguars, who have been one of the league’s most explosive passing offenses this season. According to Sharp Football Analysis, 29.9% of passing plays against Baltimore have gained ten or more yards, ranking the Ravens 29th in the league. Meanwhile, Jacksonville has gained ten or more yards on 33.2% of its passing plays, the highest rate in the NFL. When you also factor in how well Trevor Lawrence performs against zone coverage, Baltimore’s defense could be in for a long night.

A Vulnerable Defense

A big reason for Jacksonville’s passing success is Trevor Lawrence’s ability to pick apart zone coverages and his willingness to take risks by throwing downfield. According to PlayerProfiler, Lawrence ranks first in passer rating against zone coverage (120.2), fifth in explosive rating (113.9), and second in yards per attempt (8.5). These statistics are particularly relevant given the sort of defense Jesse Minter’s team likes to run.

Minter tends to rely heavily on zone coverage to limit a quarterback’s options in the passing game, even going as far as lining up with three cornerbacks and three safeties while relying less on traditional blitz packages. One way Baltimore could mitigate Lawrence’s effectiveness against zone coverage is by generating pressure without sacrificing too many defenders in coverage. Lawrence’s average time to throw is just 2.53 seconds, meaning Baltimore’s pass rush would need to get home quickly to disrupt his rhythm. That could be important considering Baltimore ranks sixth in pressure rate according to NFL Savant.

It is worthwhile to note that Lawrence has performed noticeably worse against the blitz this season as well. Per NFL Pro, he has an 82.2 passer rating against the blitz compared to a 127.7 rating when he is not blitzed. Lawrence will still present a massive challenge due to how well he plays against zone coverage and his ability to gain yards through the air, but he is not flawless. If Baltimore can send an occasional blitz to disrupt Lawrence’s rhythm, it could maintain its zone-heavy approach while targeting a potential weakness in a quarterback who has been one of the NFL’s best performers this season.

This would not entirely neutralize Lawrence, and Baltimore is not a blitz-heavy team in the first place. However, considering how poorly its pass defense has performed lately, a slight schematic adjustment could be worth exploring, especially against a quarterback who has shown some vulnerability when defenses dial up the pressure.
