The Baltimore Ravens ran one of the more inventive trick plays of the season to fool the Cleveland Browns during Sunday’s game.
The Ravens ran the play during the first quarter of Sunday’s game at Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland, Oh. Baltimore offensive coordinator Declan Doyle lined tight end Josh Cuevas up at the left guard position, but ensured that he did not line up on the line of scrimmage, making him an eligible receiver.
Cuevas ran a route and was unsurprisingly left wide open, and the Ravens turned the play into a 29-yard gain.
This is sick: #Ravens OC Declan Doyle lined up TE Josh Cuevas at LG, then released him into a route for a 29-yard gain. Because Cuevas was off the line of scrimmage, he was eligible to go downfield. This is brilliant. https://t.co/jN4icyVvEG

The Browns had no real way to prepare for that. Making it even more confusing is the fact that Cuevas is a rarely-used rookie who only had three catches all season coming into Sunday’s game. Nobody on the defense had much reason to keep an eye on him.
While this was not quite as overt as some other trick plays you see around the NFL, it was still hugely effective and very creative. It is yet another wrinkle teams will have to pay attention to when facing the Ravens’ offense.
