Ravens get unexpected twist in Isaiah Likely injury update

Training camp injuries can sometimes be the absolute worst. In this case, tight end Isaiah Likely had Ravens fans fearing exactly that after he was carted off the field with an apparent foot injury.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, though, fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Likely suffered a small fracture in his foot and, believe it or not, it is still possible for him to return to action by Week 1.

All things considered, this is some of the best possible news fans could have hoped for. Anytime you see a player carted off the field, it is easy to assume the worst-case scenario is going to unfold. Yet, Likely somehow avoided that and will have an opportunity to be ready much sooner than some thought.

Isaiah Likely's injury scare leaves the door open for a Ravens contract extension

Before his injury occurred, there were rumors swirling around social media that Likely was about to get an extension, and that would make sense. He is headed into that all-important contract year this season.

If Likely were to have a big year and the Ravens failed to capitalize on a contract extension beforehand, then his price tag would go up significantly next spring as a free agent. This way, Baltimore has an opportunity to get one done and not worry about his long-term health.

Obviously, if Likely had been out for the season, the Ravens would have a tougher time working through extension talks. A season-ending injury isn't exactly going to strengthen negotiations.

Now, Baltimore could still negotiate a long-term deal with Likely, knowing he is going to be OK. This feels like a move Eric DeCosta needs to make in good faith, too, as he's done most things right when it comes to getting necessary deals done.

With Mark Andrews getting up there in age and having showed some signs of slowing down in 2024, Likely's presence is key to the offense for years to come. Baltimore thrives on having a strong tight end room alongside Lamar Jackson and that run game, and it's fair to say Likely should be kept around for the long haul.
