New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley enters the Week 6 game against the Baltimore Ravens a legitimate Offensive Player of the Year candidate, but ESPN's Jamison Hensley explained for a piece published Friday that a different ball-carrier could steal the show at MetLife Stadium Sunday afternoon.
"J.K. Dobbins will produce more rushing yards than Saquon Barkley," Hensley predicted regarding the Baltimore running back. "Dobbins is coming off his most explosive game, averaging a season-best 3.25 yards after contact. The Giants have struggled against the run, giving up an average of 2.36 yards after contact (fourth-worst in the league).
"It could be a challenging day for Barkley against Baltimore, which has allowed just one running back to rush for more than 80 yards in a game since the start of 2021 (Dalvin Cook of the Minnesota Vikings in Week 9 last season)."
Barkley currently leads the NFL in yards from scrimmage, is second with 533 rushing yards and third with 97 carries this season. Meanwhile, Dobbins missed the entire 2021 campaign with a serious knee injury and only returned to the playing field in Week 3. He's accumulated 108 rushing yards and a score on 28 carries.
"It’s me being patient," Dobbins recently said about getting more touches, per Kyle P. Barber of Baltimore Beatdown. "I gotta keep doing that. Whether it’s the organization protecting me and being very cautious—which I really appreciate 'cause I could be somewhere where they don’t care about me, but they do here. And sometimes it can be hard as an athlete and a competitor that I am because I want to be the best. I just have to keep being patient and keep working hard and whenever my number's called, I do what I do."
He added: "Whenever they want to let me out the cage, it’ll be the right time and I trust them."
That time could be Sunday at the Giants.
