Ravens keep stockpiling depth, set to add proven special teams ace after surprising NFC cut before 2025 season
Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

There's a new safety in town with the Baltimore Ravens. After Baltimore saw the depth of their safety room whittled away with the offseason injury to Ar'Darius Washington, the Ravens have been progressing through training camp with open opportunities in the back end of their defense. The top two spots are well claimed by Kyle Hamilton and 2025 first-round draft choice Malaki Starks. Beyond that? Snaps are available for the taking.

Baltimore took advantage of a surprising move from the New Orleans Saints this week, nailing down special teams ace J.T. Gray to serve as a depth piece of the puzzle to that room. It was reported this afternoon that Gray would be joining the team in time for the start of the regular season this weekend.

Ravens reportedly set to sign veteran safety/special teamer J.T. Gray

It's a notable signing for Baltimore as they continue to provide depth up and down the 53-man roster. But why was Gray made available by New Orleans? A to Z Sports' Adam Holt offers his insight:

"Releasing J.T. Gray was one of the most surprising moves in a turbulent offseason for the Saints. It sent ripples of shock through the roster and fan base, even spurring social media reaction from a star veteran like Alvin Kamara. Gray was a leader more than anything else for the Saints over the years. A true special teams cornerstone, he built his career on making sure New Orleans was always strong in the return game. Gray was with the Saints since 2018 and appeared in fourteen or more games in six of seven campaigns. He was a stalwart of consistency. With an aging roster and a bit of cap relief involved, New Orleans chose to give him a fresh start elsewhere. They have faith in the upside of young players like Jonas Sanker and Isaiah Stanford to fortify the special teams unit.

Baltimore’s addition of Gray may be overshadowed a bit by this point of the offseason, but it shouldn’t be. Picking up this sort of experienced veteran who is hungry to win can make a legitimate difference for the Super Bowl contender. I’d expect him to join the active roster and make an impact for the Ravens this year."

Gray will now presumably compete with Sanoussi Kane and Reuben Lowery III for snaps and figures to be a core special teamer for Baltimore this season. Gray has taken at least 300 special teams snaps in every season since 2019 and posted 14 tackle in kick coverage in 2024. He'll be a welcomed addition to a Ravens team that is seeking to optimize the roster from top to bottom amid their lofty expectations entering the 2025 regular season.
