The sprained ankle Lamar Jackson suffered in Week 4 will sideline the superstar quarterback for at least one game. The Ravens will not create any mystery about the two-time MVP’s status, ruling him out for their Week 5 matchup against the Falcons.
This designation moves Tyler Huntley into the Baltimore starting lineup, which has been a familiar place for the multi-stint Raven. Huntley will not have trade import Cam Jurgens snapping to him yet, with the team ruling out the Wednesday acquisition due to a concussion. Trey Hendrickson’s absence from finger surgery will extend to a second game.
While the Ravens have a Jurgens-Jackson future in mind, first-round guard Vega Ioane’s temporary stay at center figures to last at least one more week. Jurgens was in concussion protocol following the Eagles’ Week 4 loss to the Rams. The Ravens are not concerned about the two-time Pro Bowler’s outlook, having sent the Eagles second- and sixth-round picks for him. But Jurgens’ Baltimore tenure will begin with the four-year Philly starter not in uniform.
Jackson’s absence is certainly more critical to the Ravens’ cause, and injury issues continue to plague the future Hall of Famer. This will be Jackson’s fifth absence over the past two seasons, and a multi-game hiatus could be in store once again. The Ravens will travel to Cleveland in Week 6.
This upcoming scratch will run Jackson’s missed-game (for health reasons) count to 17. The ultra-talented QB has not sustained any serious injuries as a pro, which almost makes that 17-game number more damning. Jackson, 29, has missed games due to five different injuries (two ankle issues to go with knee, hamstring and back problems) since 2021. He also did not look himself for a while following the 2025 hamstring issue, and the Ravens needed Huntley — brought back because of Cooper Rush’s struggles in the QB2 role last season — again when Jackson sustained the back injury late last season.
Although Jackson’s injury issues bring obvious concern given his play style, the Ravens armed their top player with extraordinary leverage this offseason by restructuring his deal. Like Dak Prescott before his record-smashing extension in 2024, Jackson carries a monster cap hit in a contract year and a substantial cap penalty in 2028. The latter issue would only come into play if the sides cannot agree on an extension before the contract voids, but offseason extension talks did not yield too much progress.
The Ravens had a goal to extend Jackson before free agency, rather than restructure his current deal, but the ninth-year veteran is now in a commanding position — albeit while continuing to carry health risks.
Huntley, 28, has made 16 career starts; 11 of those have come with Baltimore. The Ravens brought Huntley back via a practice squad deal in August 2025 and re-signed him to a two-year, $5MM contract this offseason. Rookie UDFA Joe Fagiano is the other QB on the Ravens’ active roster; the team is not carrying a practice squad passer presently.
