Ravens' Lamar Jackson could have major leverage if deal can't be reached

Quarterback Lamar Jackson is heading into the 2022 season without a long-term deal, a situation that benefits him more than the Baltimore Ravens. The 2019 NFL MVP, who set deadline of Friday to reach a contract extension, could play out the season on his five-year rookie contract, giving him more leverage for 2023.

Jackson currently counts $23 million against the Ravens' salary cap. Baltimore could elect to franchise tag Jackson next year, to the cost of $45 million. But with an estimated salary cap room of just $41 million for 2023, per Spotrac, Baltimore would face a lot of moving parts to keep the star.

The team reportedly offered Jackson a contract extension worth more than the five-year, $230.5 million deal the Cardinals gave Kyler Murrary. Like Kirk Cousins and Deshaun Watson, Jackson wants a fully guaranteed deal. But the Ravens apparently won't offer one.

If Jackson were to leave Baltimore, he'd have plenty of suitors.

The Atlanta Falcons and Pittsburgh Steelers drafted quarterbacks in 2022, but both teams shouldn't pass up the opportunity to admit fault if they don't pan out. Jackson certainly would be on their radar. The Indianapolis Colts and Washington Commanders, who have veteran starters, also would be interested.

If Jackson and Baltimore cannot agree on a long-term deal, he could become one of the biggest free- agency stories in NFL history.
