Green Bay Packers wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks is buried on a deep depth chart, which makes him the perfect candidate for trade rumors. A fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Virginia product has shown plenty of promise throughout his young career despite limited opportunities. Wicks appeared in 14 games last year and finished the season with 30 receptions for 332 yards and two touchdowns on 46 targets. These numbers may not sound like much, but it’s pretty solid when you consider he was splitting snaps with Romeo Doubs, Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, and first-round pick Matthew Golden.
Nobody is saying Dontayvion Wicks could be a Hall of Famer in a different offense, but the fifth-round pick would probably benefit from a trade. With this in mind, Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton believes the Baltimore Ravens should pursue the veteran pass-catcher as he enters the final year of his rookie contract.
“At 6′-1″ and 206 pounds, Wicks can be a big-bodied X receiver in the Ravens offense who’s a threat in the red zone,” Moton writes. “In his first two seasons, he caught nine touchdown passes while on the field for less than 55 percent of the Packers’ offensive snaps.”
It’s easy to see why the Baltimore Ravens would, in theory, want to trade for Dontayvion Wicks. The team parted ways with former head coach John Harbaugh after almost two decades and moved forward with former Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter. This team clearly believes they have the talent to make a deep postseason run with a new man running the show, and while this is one of the league’s better rosters, they could use more help at wide receiver.
Zay Flowers is a solid starter, but the rest of the depth chart leaves something to be desired. Historically speaking, Baltimore has always pursued older veteran pass-catchers to see if they have anything left in their tank. However, after underwhelming tenures from guys like DeSean Jackson, Sammy Watkins, Odell Beckham, and DeAndre Hopkins, it might be time for the team to start looking at younger options. The only question is whether or not the Packers would be willing to trade Dontayvion Wicks.
Dontayvion Wicks is entering the final year of his rookie contract and has yet to record 600 yards in a single season. His production has dropped every year since he entered the league, and he has yet to prove he can be a featured part of a passing attack. While he would likely put up better numbers on a less crowded depth chart, players like him generally don’t fetch more than a late-round pick in a trade.
Quite frankly, it might not be worth Green Bay’s trouble to trade Dontayvion Wicks for such a small return. While Wicks is currently fourth on the depth chart, he has a relatively clear path to playing time. Romeo Doubs joined the Patriots, the jury is still out on first-round pick Matthew Golden, and Christian Watson isn’t exactly the picture of health. The Packers have Super Bowl aspirations for the upcoming season, and trading Wicks for a late-round dart throw could come back to haunt them.
