Ravens Promote New Assistant Head Coach From Within

The Baltimore Ravens - like several other teams in the league - are spending the days leading up to free agency replacing departed coaches and filling in empty spots on the coaching staff.

Former defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald has moved on to Seattle as head coach, defensive backs coach Dennard Wilson has taken over as the Titans' defensive coordinator, and former assistant head coach Anthony Weaver is the new defensive coordinator in Miami.

On Monday, John Harbaugh and the Ravens announced the promotion of Chris Hewitt to assistant head coach. Hewitt also coaches the secondary and is the passing game coordinator.

Hewitt started with Baltimore as a special teams coach in 2012 and worked his way up the coaching ladder on the defensive side of the ball.

The track record of Ravens assistant coaches being promoted to head coaching positions speaks for itself. Rex Ryan and David Culley both held the position of assistant head coach before being hired by the Jets and Texans, respectively.

The Ravens have lost Macdonald, Weaver and Wilson all in the same cycle, and Hewitt will need to catch on quickly to keep Baltimore at the top of its game.
