Ravens QB coach: Lamar Jackson contract talks won't 'be a distraction'

Baltimore Ravens quarterback and 2019 NFL regular-season Most Valuable Player Lamar Jackson had his fifth-year option picked up in April and recently suggested he could see himself staying put through the remainder of his career.

As Jackson and Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta continue to negotiate terms of an extension, Baltimore quarterbacks coach James Urban told reporters Wednesday any uncertainty about his QB's future won't impact the team when it matters most.

"I don’t think it’ll be a distraction," Urban said, according to Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "I have nothing to do with that. I tend to mow my own grass there. We have an unbelievable front office. I know they have plans, and they’re in great hands, and they’ll handle all that [on the] business side.

"We’re just trying to get better and continue growing and improving every aspect of our game, and his game. So that’s all we’re doing. I don’t worry about that. I don’t think he worries about it. He seems to be the same old guy that he is all the time. So I don’t really have many concerns there."

Jackson, who does not have an agent, said last week he would love to remain with the Ravens "forever" and that he was hopeful "we’ll be making something happen pretty soon" regarding his second NFL contract.

One imagines the 24-year-old would prefer to put pen to paper on a deal before the Ravens open the regular season at the Las Vegas Raiders on Sept. 13.
