The Baltimore Ravens are taking a chance with a former Pro Bowl player.

Veteran defensive end Yannick Ngakoue was waived by the Ravens on Thursday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The team is hoping Ngakoue will clear waivers so they can re-sign him to their practice squad.

Ngakoue is in his ninth NFL season. Had the Ravens cut him before the trade deadline, he would have become an unrestricted free agent and been free to sign with any team. Since the move was made after Tuesday’s deadline, Ngakoue will now have to go through waivers.

There is a chance a team that needs pass-rush help could claim Ngakoue. The 29-year-old has played limited snaps this season but has 1.5 sacks in five games. Ngakoue had four sacks in 13 games with the Chicago Bears last season.

Ngakoue has played for six different teams and has six seasons with eight or more sacks. His best years came in his first four NFL seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, when he had 37.5 sacks in 63 total games, including 12 in a Pro Bowl season in 2017.
