Recent Eagles workouts could help with lingering concerns regarding roster depth

As the Eagles gear up for training camp, Philadelphia brought in three defensive linemen to add depth for camp.

Jacob Sykes, Joseph Evans, and Leonard Payne all worked out for the team, looking to bring value to the Eagles and extend their NFL careers.

Jacob Sykes- Harvard/UCLA

Sykes is the most experienced out of the group, signing with the Seahawks out of college as a UDFA in 2023. After being released at the conclusion of training camp, Sykes joined the UFL's San Antonio Brahmas in 2024, appearing in 17 games over the past two seasons and recording 32 tackles and 2.5 sacks during his UFL career. Sykes played his college ball at Harvard and UCLA from 2018 to 2022.

Leonard Payne-Fresno State/Colorado

Payne looks to jumpstart his NFL career after a short stint with the Dolphins last year and a short-lived stint with the Packers on a futures contract from January to May. Payne had several workouts with NFL teams, including the Packers, Patriots, and Jets, during the previous year. Payne spent 2018 to 2023 at Fresno State and the University of Colorado before his undrafted free agent stint with the Dolphins in 2024.

Joe Evans-UTSA/LSU

Evans was an undrafted free agent from the University of Texas-San Antonio this draft cycle with the Indianapolis Colts in May. Evans spent six seasons in college football, split between LSU and UTSA. Evans appeared in 45 games in college, recording 69 tackles and 5.0 sacks despite dealing with multiple injuries in school.

The Eagles will continually look to improve in the front seven, especially in the defensive line room. Philadelphia has lost nearly 50% of its sack production from last year due to retirements and free agency, after positioning itself as one of the NFL's strongest units in 2024.

While the Eagles have consistently invested in the front seven with players like Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Ty Robinson, and Antwaun Powell-Ryland, it's clear the team still views the position as a need moving forward.
