Trystan Colon was signed by the Detroit Lions shortly after news had broken about Frank Ragnow's shock retirement from the NFL. Colon, a five year veteran in the league, has been the definition of a journeyman considering his shorter experience having been in the league.
Most recently, he suited up for the Arizona Cardinals for the 2023 season after being waived by the New York Jets, playing in 14 games with them at guard. His signing by the Lions indicates that they feel like one of Graham Glasgow or Tate Ratledge will be flipped over the center position, which should open up a starting opportunity for Colon off rip.
However, if that shift happens for one of Glasgow or Ratledge in addition to rookie guard Miles Frazier really impressing in training camp and preseason, it's completely within the realm of possibility that Colon could be the odd man out for Detroit headed into the season, leading to him being cut or waived by the team.
Colon is by no means an expensive addition by Detroit. He signed a $1,170,000 deal this offseason, which isn't exactly making a dent in the Lions' cap room - they still have $40 million to spend. But, with the competition at center still being so up in the air, it remains to be seen how Colon or the rookie Frazier really fit into the Lions' plans on the IOL.
Now, we've still got to see how NFL ready Frazier is heading into training camp. He also signed his rookie deal with the team, but that guarantees no safety with the roster. But, Frazier is more of a pure guard than Colon, Glasgow, and Ratledge. His security feels a bit more guaranteed for that reason at guard, as the team looks to have one of these three switchable linemen stick at center for the year.
There's also a chance that the Lions decide to keep both Colon and Frazier on as guards switching off and on to both lessen the load on Colon and allow Frazier more time to onboard into NFL action. Given the skill of the Lions' coaching staff at developing young talent, it feels possible that both Colon and Frazier will become mainstays on the line at guard rather than be sacrificed.
