Recent NFL draft pick gets second chance with Chiefs after he was poached from Kansas City's practice squad

The Kansas City Chiefs have brought back a player they claimed on waivers during roster cuts a season ago

The Chiefs announced on Friday that they have re-signed CB Darius Rush to the practice squad. Arrowhead Pride's Pete Sweeney reported that Rush was at practice on Friday.

A former fifth-round draft pick out of South Carolina by the Indianapolis Colts, Rush was considered a riser ahead of the 2023 NFL draft. Despite strong performances in the preseason in 2023, Colts GM Chris Ballard decided to release him and Kansas City swooped in to claim him.

Rush was on the 53-man roster for just a week before he was released and signed to the Chiefs' practice squad. It was this time last season that Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers came calling, poaching Rush, and signing him to their 53-man roster.

This 6-foot-2 and 198-pound cornerback appeared in five games with the Steelers over the past two seasons, recording three total tackles and a pass defended. He spent time both on the Pittsburgh 53-man roster and on their practice squad.

A to Z Sports' Rob Gregson tells me that Rush had been solid when he played, but unfortunately, he couldn't stay healthy for key stretches of his time with the team. He had been one of the Steelers' starting gunners on special teams, but he was relinquished of that role rather quickly.

This move came a week after the Steelers signed former first-round draft pick C.J. Henderson to their practice squad. It sounds as if he supplanted Rush in Pittsburgh.

While the Chiefs' cornerback room has performed admirably this season, they certainly need depth at the position with Trent McDuffie, Jaylen Watson, Josh Williams, and Nazeeh Johnson as the only cornerbacks on the 53-man roster. Rush joins Eric Scott Jr., Nic Jones, and Keith Taylor on the practice squad.
