Recent picture from Cowboys' OTAs practice raises intrigue around crucial battle for starting role
Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

When the Dallas Cowboys selected Cooper Beebe in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, the lesson was clear as day: The front office was hoping the Kansas State interior offensive lineman took over as center following Tyler Biadasz's departure in free agency.

Such suspicions were promptly confirmed as Beebe revealed the Cowboys coaching staff immediately reached out to ask him to start working at snapping the football, something he never did at the collegiate level despite being very versatile for the Wildcats.

But make no mistake about it: Beebe is far from guaranteed the starting role.

Multiple players are getting a shot at center during Cowboys OTAs

Not only that but the Cowboys are allowing multiple young players to stake their claim for the role. Although the obvious competitor for Beebe's aspirations is Brock Hoffman, who backed up Biadasz when needed in 2023, he's not the only one being given a chance to compete.

A recent picture which you can see below from Cowboys practice that the team posted on Twitter/X shows second-year player T.J. Bass working with the first-team offense. Bass who made the 53-man roster as an undrafted rookie last year and held his own playing at guard.

Before the Cowboys picked Beebe in the draft, Bass was already perceived by many as a candidate to learn the position, something I argued for in a February article outlining why letting Biadasz walk in free agency could be a good idea.

Bass was a preseason standout and showed tremendous physicality as a run blocker, consistently moving defenders at the point of attack in limited playing time. He'll make sure to give Hoffman and Beebe a run for their money.

And based on Dak Prescott's comments, you can add Dakoda Shepley to that list as well. Shepley spent the 2023 season on the Cowboys' practice squad.

"Just communicating, right? Communicating, understanding, making sure that (Beebe) understands he has a voice, and really challenging him," Prescott told reporters when asked about Beebe having a veteran voice in his ear like the quarterback had as a rookie with Travis Frederick.

"And not just him—all those young guys. As I just said, it's about all those young guys getting up to our level, understanding what this offense is about, to make sure as we get into training camp, we can explode. Brock's done a great job, Cooper's done a great job, Dakoda, every single one of those guys, T.J. Bass, whoever needs to step in who's played in that position, who's had reps in that position is picking it up, and that's really a credit to our coaches."
