Referee in Broncos vs. Colts breaks down what went wrong on the final play that cost Denver the victory

The Denver Broncos lost heartbreakingly to the Indianapolis Colts in Week 2. Denver had the victory in hand as the Colts lined up for a game-winning field goal and missed. However, a flag for leverage gave the Colts' kicker an extra shot at victory, and this time he didn't miss.

It was a frustrating game for Broncos Country, where the defense had no answer for Daniel Jones or Jonathan Taylor in the contest. Nevertheless, it ultimately came down to a mistake late in the game, something that was discussed immediately postgame with the referee Craig Wrolstad.

The referee opened up about what he saw on the field that allowed Indianapolis another opportunity.

"For leverage, as a defender, you're not allowed to place your hand on an opponent or teammate and push off to propel yourself into the air to block a kick," Wrolstad said. "In this case, number 92 came across the line to the right guard, and he put his hands on the right guard and pushed off him to elevate himself in the air in order to try to block the kick.

"You're not allowed to do that. It's a personal foul and a 15-yard penalty," Wrolstad said. "In this case, since it was the last play of the game and it was a foul on the defense, we extended the game for one untimed down. We assessed the 15-yard penalty, and they were able to run another play."

Defense allows Indianapolis to have a day

Despite a dominant performance in Week 1, the Broncos just couldn't stop Taylor and the offense. The Colts' running back gashed Denver for 165 yards on 25 carries while adding two catches for 50 yards and a touchdown.

Taking a look back on their Week 1 victory over the Titans, Denver allowed only 7 first downs and 133 yards of total offense. In Week 2 against the Colts, Denver's defense allowed 26 first downs and 473 yards of total offense.

Despite nearly 500 yards of total offense, Denver still had a chance to win this game down the stretch.

Bo Nix and the offense bounce back in Week 2

Despite the horrific loss, one of the positives was that of sophomore quarterback Bo Nix. That's not to say he was flawless, though. Nix had an interception late in the contest, but overall had an efficient day of football.

He finished his day going 22-of-30 with 206 yards and three touchdowns. Early on in training camp and in the offseason, it was widely discussed about the rise of Troy Franklin in the offense, and the Week 2 contest showed exactly that. Franklin was all over the field and Nix's top weapon, finishing with eight receptions for 89 yards and a touchdown.

Of course, all anyone will remember from this loss is the miscue at the end of the game that ultimately gave the Colts another swing at victory. However, there were some positives despite the crushing defeat. Luckily, even with a loss like that, there's still plenty of football to be played.

Denver will look to correct some of the mistakes and get the defense back on track as they have an upcoming divisional showdown against the Chargers.
