A former Kansas City Chiefs draft pick just found himself on the waiver wire days into training camp, and it could lead him right back to where he started his NFL career.
According to multiple reports, the Tennessee Titans waived DT Keondre Coburn to make room for OLB Jihad Ward. The Chiefs drafted the 25-year-old Coburn in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of the University of Texas.
Coburn made the initial 53-man roster in Kansas City, but was waived in October of that year with hopes he'd make it through waivers and be signed to the practice squad. The Denver Broncos had other plans, claiming Coburn on waivers and keeping him on their roster for about four weeks.
Coburn was reunited in Kansas City after the Broncos waived him in November, joining the Chiefs' practice squad, but that, too, would be short-lived. On December 13, the Titans poached Coburn from the practice squad in Kansas City. Coburn appeared in 15 games with Tennessee last season, recording 14 total tackles. I'm told his release is nothing more than roster churn in what is considered to be a very deep interior defensive line room.
The Chiefs have 888 defensive snaps to make up for with the loss of Derrick Nnadi and Tershawn Wharton in free agency. Omarr Norman-Lott appears to be a significant part of that plan, but perhaps Coburn could also be involved in it. Of course, he'll have to clear waivers and sign with the team or be claimed by Kansas City, but it's clear that the Chiefs once wanted to continue developing and keep Coburn. Maybe they're still interested in another crack at it.
The clearing waivers part of it might not be so easy, given the injuries around the league at the defensive tackle position (looking at you, Detroit Lions and Las Vegas Raiders).
