The final round of NFL roster cuts are due by 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday. Last week, San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch said that he believed that the team was getting "pretty close" to cutting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
A couple of days later, it was reported that the Seattle Seahawks were "very interested" in signing "Jimmy G." if and when he is released by his longtime employer. While Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll still hasn't revealed who his starting quarterback will be in Week 1, all indications are pointing to Geno Smith having the edge over Drew Lock.
Insider Jordan Schultz reported late Monday morning that Lynch is already thinking about the possible ramifications that could unfold if the team cuts loose Garoppolo. Coincidentally, the Niners and Seahawks have an early-season matchup this season in Week 2.
As of this morning, the #49ers had not made any more progress on a Jimmy Garappolo trade, sources say. San Francisco would clear $25.5M in cap space if he’s released by tomorrow’s 4pm ET deadline. I’m also told John Lynch prefers not to face Jimmy G with the #Seahawks Week 2.

With the Denver Broncos in 2021, Lock played in six games (three starts), posting a 60.4% completion percentage for 787 passing yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. In four games (three starts) with Seattle last year, Smith went 65-for-95 for 702 passing yards, five touchdowns and one interception.
