Anthony Lynn has landed a new NFL coaching job with what appears to be a significant portfolio attached to it.

Lynn will become an assistant head coach to Kyle Shanahan with the San Francisco 49ers, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Lynn, who served as the Detroit Lions offensive coordinator in 2021, turned down other offers to take the job and is expected to be a “key cog” in the Niners’ offensive setup.

Lynn has a long record of success as an NFL offensive coordinator, and he oversaw Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert’s breakout rookie season. His offenses have typically been run-friendly, and it’s easy to see that philosophy fitting with the 49ers as they transition to Trey Lance as a dual-threat starting quarterback.

Although Lynn went 33-31 in four years leading the Chargers, his teams ran into a lot of situational mistakes. That may be less of an issue in a role like this, allowing him to focus more on the team’s offensive scheme.
